Chris and Charlie Clegg, Lemans Legends, June 11/12
Charlie reports: "We had a good qualifying session which was hugely useful for me to familiarise myself with the legendary circuit having never raced there before, and we actually managed a relatively impressive spot on the grid, being ahead of an Aston Martin DB3S and some other quick cars. In the race, my father, Chris, did the first stint carrying out an effective rolling start and I then took over to do the 2nd half of the race. Aside from a slight misfire at 6500 rpm, which we have now cured with a trip to the rolling road, the car ran fantastically and we ended up coming 3rd in class behind Stephen Bond's Lotus Elan 26R and David Cooke's Lotus Elite. We ended up coming 39th out of 63 in the race and had a simply brilliant weekend. All in all, an incredible event, made even more special by the fact that Stirling Moss announced his retirement from racing... at the age of 81 and after rather an impressive career, to say the least! [N.B. Stirling drove this actual car in practice for Sebring in 1961]
The race was actually covered on Eurosport and S221 gets quite a bit of airtime, with the commentators having a long discussion about how much they like Sebring Sprites!
The link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HEb5xpeZSE and the Sprite bit is at 7:35 in the clip. Not sure I buy their argument that you can't fit in a Sebring Sprite though, what with John (Sprinzel) being so tall and the fact that Gerry Marshall once jumped into S221 to try it out for size years ago and he was fine!"
